Christians Are
The Most Tolerant
Humanists
say: Intolerant attitudes, often cultivated by orthodox religions
and puritanical cultures, unduly repress sexual conduct. The right
to birth control, abortion and divorce should be recognized.
The problem is not that Christians are not
tolerant of others, the problem is that others (supporters of abortion,
homosexuality, etc.) are not tolerant of Christians.
Yes, there have been Christians who have "repressed"
conduct not condemned in the Bible. There were Christian groups,
for example, who condemned all sex that does not result in procreation.
But these are exceptions.
The Bible teaches us to be tolerant of, and
love all people. That is what Christianity is about. However, sexual
activists have redefined the word "tolerant" to meaning
something different. The new definition of "tolerant"
says that we must not only be tolerant of others, we must accept
their behavior as right and moral. This is not something Christians
can ever do.
As Christians we are tolerant of others--meaning
we do not persecute others, but instead we love those who do not
believe in Christ as their savior. While we pray others will believe
in the Gospel message, there is nothing in the Bible that says we
should require others to believe. Nor, since Christianity is a faith
of the heart, can we require others to believe.
The problem is that those who support activities
that are condemned in the Bible are not tolerant of Christianity.
They do not want to allow Christians to believe what the Bible teaches.
They want to require everyone, including Christians, to believe
what they believe. That is intolerance.
