Christianity
and democracy go together.
Some people
think that, if they are an American they are Christian.
Many people
in other countries, in particular Muslim countries, think that all
Americans are Christians.
Historically
Christianity and America are closely tied together. For example,
the motto of the Revolutionary war was, "No King but King Jesus."
An excellent book to read about how Christianity and America are
related would be "The Light and the Glory" by Peter Marshall
and David Manuel.
However, Christianity
is not linked to any specific culture or country. Neither American
culture, nor American democracy, are required for Christianity.
Unlike religions such as Islam, there is no Christian culture. When
someone becomes a Christian they do not need to leave their culture.
There is, however,
a Christian lifestyle. Christians are called, in obedience to God,
to live their lives in a certain way. For example, Christians
are to love God and love their neighbors. So while we do not
need to change our culture, when we accept Christ we do change our
lifestyle.
In the Bible,
chapter 13 of the book of Romans talks about a Christian's relationship
with government--all types and forms of government.
"Obey
the government, for God is the one who put it there. All governments
have been placed in power by God"
Romans 13:1 (NLT)
No specific
form of government is mentioned. Nowhere does the Bible say that
one form of government is better than another. All governments are
to be obeyed, except when they contradict God.
