Language of the King James Version of the Bible

Here is an example of how the meaning of words have changed:

This is Genesis 1:28 from the KJV: "And God blessed them, and God said unto them, 'Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every lilvingthing that moveth upon the earth.'"

What does the word "replenish" mean? Here is what Webster's says:

1. to bring back to a state of fullness or completeness.

2. to fill again or anew

3. to supply a stove or fire with fresh fuel

Is God saying in Genesis 1:28 that people are to bring the earth BACK TO a state of fullness? That would mean that at some previous time the earth existed in a state of fullness. Which raises the question, did God fill the earth on day four and then wipe out everything, so that on day six He could command Adam to fill the earth again? That does not make sense.

The problem is that, when the KJV was translated, the English word "replenish" had the meaning of filling for the first time. A meaning completely opposite from today's meaning. This can make understanding the true meaning of God's word difficult because we do not understand the meaning of the English words in the KJV.
