Love, Christianity, Jesus and Salvation

It seems like Christianity and Jesus are increasingly under attack. What's going on? What we'll be looking at is what happens when Christians use human wisdom to interpret the Bible, twisting scripture away from its intended message. This blog is dedicated to using Scripture itself to interpret and help us understand Scripture. You are welcome to add your comments and thoughts. Other viewpoints are welcome. Disagreements are welcome.

Doctor recommends parents kill their two month old baby.

She's Two Months Old - Let Her Die

Leah Grace was born on March 20, 2009. On Friday (two days ago) her doctor told Leah's parents to bring her to the hospital where she would be given a lethal medication to kill her. From the shocked look on the parent's faces the doctor assumed the hospital was not an option, so the doctor recommended they bring Leah home, but stop feeding her so she would die.

Leah does have medical problems. She will probably not live long. So the doctor says you might as well just kill her now. Murder is the better option.

Read Leah's story on Caring Bridge: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/leahgracejarmer

I really wonder if this is a foreshadow of what we'll see if we have government run health care. When health care is limited, then why care for those who appear to be dying anyway? What options will the government give you?

Here's the answer:

Oregon has a state run plan called the Oregon Health Plan. Barbara Wagner had lung cancer that was diagnosed as fatal. There are drugs that would prolong her life and improve the quality of her life. But the Oregon Health Plan said, "Sorry not covered, but we will pay for the drugs needed for your suicide." (Assisted suicide is legal in Oregon.)

Why? Because it is the official policy of the Oregon Health Plan that if you have advanced cancer, they will not provide treatment. The government will provide everything need for suicide, however. It is best that you die and get out of the way so people who are not as sick can be treated.

Welcome to government health care.

How Terrible It Will Be For Those Who Rest In Luxury

Listen to these words from God in the Book of Joel:

"How terrible it will be for you who lounge in luxury and think you are secure."

"You push away every thought of coming disaster, but your actions only bring the day of judgment closer."

I hate all your show and pretense--the hypocrisy of your religious festivals and solemn assemblies. Away with your hymns of praise! They are only noise in my ears. I will not listen to your music, no matter how lovely it is. Instead I want to see a mighty flood of justice, a river of righteous living that will never run dry.

This is what the Lord says: The people have sinned again and again., and I will not forget it. I will not let them go unpunished any longer! They have rejected the laws of the Lord, refusing to obey Him. They have been lead astray by the same lies that deceived their ancestors.

God is not saying that, because some people are rich they face judgment. He is saying that people are taking comfort in their riches instead of living a righteous life in obedience to God. Wealth does not keep someone out of heaven. It is sin and sin alone that sends people to hell. But if you are trusting in yourself in any way... trusting in your wealth to save you... then you are headed for the destruction of hell. If a nation is trusting in itself... trusting in it's strength and wealth, instead of living in obedience to God, then that nation is headed for destruction.

Which way is America heading?

Psalm 52:7

"Look what happens to mighty warriors
who do not trust in God.
They trust their wealth instead
and grow more and more bold in their wickedness."
(NLT)

What a perfect description of America. America is a mighty warrior, we have a strong and powerful military. But as a nation we no longer trust God, we trust our wealth, just as Psalm 52 says. And just as this Psalm says, we are growing more and more bold in our wickedness.

It is a wickedness that is destroying America. The folk song from the 60's "Eve of Destruction" has the perfect title describing where America now stands. The song claimed we were on the eve of destruction because of all the "evil" in the world and the potential for nuclear holocaust. But it did not dig deep enough. It did not get to the root of the "evil" the composer saw.

America's problem... what is destroying America, is that we have become more and more bold in our wickedness. God gave us ten simple rules. Look at how we have become bold in ignoring them.

Thou shalt not murder... 1,000,000 babies are murdered every year by abortion. And we accept this!! Publications (for example MS magazine) celebrate it as "good" and "right". Yes, we are on the eve of destruction.

Thou shalt not commit adultery... the number of unmarried households in America now exceeds the number of married households. Those who are married are becoming a minority. It is totally acceptable to live together outside of marriage. We don't even think twice about it any more. It is totally acceptable to divorce and remarry, as many times as you want! Yes, we are on the eve of destruction.

Thou shalt not covet... this one is not even on our radar. We see nothing wrong at all with coveting. Americans live a life of coveting. Wanting more, and getting more is what it is all about. What is more important in your life? Your favorite team winning a championship, or God? Yes, we are on the eve of destruction.

Thou shalt not commit adultery... Jesus said that if you look at a woman (or man) with lust, you have committed adultery in your heart. (Matthew 5:27) God looks at your heart! You can not watch television without committing adultery. And pornography is one of the largest industries in America. It is pure and plain adultery. Yes, we are on the eve of destruction.

Thou shalt not steal... we are thieves and we are not willing to admit it. If you run a red light, you are a thief. You have stolen time from the person who has the green light. If you leave work early, or arrive late, you are a thief. You have stolen from the company you work for. We think of a thief as being someone who robs a 7-11 or a bank, but the truth is that anyone who takes something that does not belong to them is a thief. Do you copy music from friends or the internet? You are a thief! Do you cheat a little on your income tax? You are a thief! Yes, we are on the eve of destruction.

Judges Chapter 19

Judges chapter 19 describes a traveler who is staying overnight in a stranger's home. Wicked men of the town pound on the door and demand they be given the visiting man so they can have sex with him. Eventually they send out the visitor's concubine who is raped and killed.

What kind of story is this to have in the Bible?

First we need to get a broad overview of this book. The first two chapters of the Book of Judges are introductory. Starting in chapter three we see a pattern that is repeated throughout the book. The Israelites turn from God and start "doing what was right in their own eyes". Things get bad. The Israelites finally turn back to God and plead for Him to save them. God then raises up a righteous judge (a "judge" was a ruler) who leads Israel back to righteousness again.

This pattern is repeated a number of times, continuing through chapter 16. Each time Israel turns away from God they sink deeper into sin and evil.

Starting in chapter 17 the book of Judges stops the chronological telling of the history of Israel and presents two stories that illustrate how far Israel has fallen.

The first shows how deep Israel has gone into idolatry, when a Levi, who is only supposed to serve in the Temple, becomes the personal priest for a man who is worshiping idols. Although in our culture today we can not feel the shock of this, chapters 17 and 18 present the story of a tremendous spiritual evil.

Starting in chapter 19 we read about an unbelievable moral evil. This story is included as an illustration of how far Israel has fallen.

Why does the man send out the concubine? Because in the culture of the people surrounding Israel, a culture Israel had adopted, women essentially had no value. Women existed simply to serve men, and be used and abused as men saw fit. Please note, THIS IS NOT BIBLICAL. This is the way pagans live, and it is typical of pagan cultures around the world. The reason why this particular story is included in the Bible is because it illustrates how the man, on the surface is appearing very Godly--for example he won't stay overnight in a non-Israelite city. Yet, at heart is he has completely accepted and is participating in the pagan culture, even to the point of the death of someone who is made in the image of God, and who thus is precious and loved by God.

Notice the last line of the book of Judges: "In those days Israel had no king, everyone did as he saw fit."
